Former Georgia defensive back Chad Clay's arrest for allegedly stealing a pair of $30 Apple headphones occurred while the victim was playing pickup basketball at the Ramsey Student Center basketball courts.

According to the incident report, a university student placed a pair of headphones down next to his phone and water bottle on the bleachers closest to the front of the court. Upon returning, the victim noticed his headphones were missing and reported them stolen.

An officer was able to identify Clay as the responsible party and got a judge to take a warrant out for his arrest for misdemeanor theft by taking. The officer contacted Clay over the phone and informed him of the warrant on Wednesday and gave him the number to the Clarke County Sheriff's Office Warrants Division so he could settle it.

Clay was booked Wednesday evening at 6:04 p.m. and released at 7:17 p.m. on $1,500 bond. He was subsequently dismissed from the Georgia football program, announced in a news release shortly after 8:30 p.m.

This is Clay’s second arrest in a four-month span. He was first arrested alongside fellow freshman Julian Rochester in an incident in which they were charged with possessing a BB gun on campus and criminal damage to property. That case is still pending, although Clay and Rochester’s attorney expects it to be resolved soon.

Clay enrolled early with the football program in January.

“Unfortunately, Chad will no longer be a part of our football program,” head coach Kirby Smart said in a statement. “It is very disappointing, and we wish him the best in his efforts to continue his education.”

Clay is the second Georgia player to be kicked off the program this offseason. He follows defensive lineman Chauncey Rivers, who was dismissed after three-drug related arrests in a seven-month span.

Clay, 19, came to Georgia as a three-star prospect with hopes of cracking the defensive back rotation. He played high school ball at Peachtree Ridge.
