One Georgia QB has shown tendencies to lead 'see-saw' battle for starting job
On one hand, head coach Kirby Smart said Greyson Lambert, Brice Ramsey and Jacob Eason have not separated themselves in Georgia’s starting quarterback position battle.
But Smart mentioned there has been the occasional instance where one particular player inches ahead and nearly emerges as the top quarterback. But just as that thought creeps into his mind, something else happens that evens the playing field.
“There have been a couple of times where I thought Greyson was going to stick his shoulders above the pack and maybe he makes a poor decision,” Smart said. “And then Brice makes a play and Jacob makes a throw. It’s really been a see-saw battle.”
Lambert began the spring as the No. 1 quarterback but Ramsey has shared time at the spot. Eason has worked with the second and third teams.
With Georgia one practice away from the G-Day spring game, Smart would prefer for a quarterback to take the lead sometime soon.
“I really don’t think there’s been a lot of separation and it’s frustrating because I think we’d rather have a guy take the leadership role, and take the bull by the horns,” Smart said. “It seems like every time a guy takes a step forward, he makes a poor decision and comes back.”
The G-Day game will play a big role in Smart’s evaluation heading into voluntary summer workouts. At the same time, Smart said the Bulldogs won’t put the entire offensive playbook on display in Saturday’s spring game.
“It will be simplified some to make it easier,” Smart said. “Sometimes, guys play better when it’s easier and it’s dummied down, and we don’t do as much. I really hope someone steps out. I hope all three play great.”
