Freshman quarterback Jacob Eason has yet to run with the first team yet. But it appears he has impressed Georgia’s football coaching staff to some degree with what he has done when practicing with the second and third units.

Based on what head coach Kirby Smart had to say after Saturday’s scrimmage, Eason put in a strong performance, even though he spent the day practicing with the backup groups. Greyson Lambert and Brice Ramsey split the first-team reps at what was described as a 50/50 clip.

Following Saturday’s scrimmage, Smart said Eason was able to make some plays on the field.

“It was his first chance to go in (Sanford Stadium) in a live situation,” Smart said. “He was a little nervous early. But as he progressed, he did some good things. He made some throws.”

Smart said Eason hit some deep balls to receivers Riley Ridley and Shaquery Wilson when with the third team, noting, “They got on top of the three-DBs, let’s just say that.” Smart even went so far as to say the third-unit receivers “made some explosive plays with Jacob in there.”

During regular situations, Eason ran with the third team. He moved up to the second team when Georgia ran two-minute and third-down situations.

It’s unknown at this time whether Eason will receive any first-team reps before the end of spring. Five practices remain — including a second scrimmage Saturday — before the Bulldogs hold their annual G-Day Game on April 16.

While Eason hasn’t been with the first team yet, he has had the opportunity to throw to first-group receivers who have mixed in with the second unit during particular times.

“He completes the ball to Terry (Godwin), he completes the ball to Reggie (Davis), and some of those guys are one wideouts,” Smart said. “So he’s throwing the ball to one wideouts in there and making some plays.”
