Kirby Smart lauds Isaiah Wynn as the 'bricks and mortar' of offensive line

If all goes how Georgia head coach Kirby Smart wants it to, Isaiah Wynn will stay inside at left guard.

Smart praised Wynn and said he’s the best lineman the Bulldogs have up front. But it’s clear Smart and offensive line coach Sam Pittman see him best used along the interior.

"Isaiah is the bricks and mortar," Smart said. "He’s the most talented guy in there. He does a good job. We don’t want to have to move him out. We don’t want that to be the option. We’re trying to train as many guys as we can at tackle."

Wynn played the first eight games of the 2015 season at left guard before kicking out to left tackle for the final five. Wynn moved back inside at the start of spring practice, with it apparent that he’ll stay there unless the coaching staff feels it has to move him back to tackle.

With Wynn inside, Kendall Baker has taken over at left tackle and has impressed Smart thus far this spring.

"Kendall has been a pleasant surprise to me because I didn’t really know what to expect," Smart said. "He’s playing the left tackle spot. He’s competing. We challenge Kendall every day to play with more toughness."

At right guard, Smart commended Dyshon Sims’ early play and even said he may get some cross-training at tackle.

As for right tackle Greg Pyke, Smart said there are some “growing pains” that have come with making the transition from playing right guard the past few seasons.

"The more he does it, the more comfortable he’ll be," Smart said. "He doesn’t trust things right now. It’s like you’re on an island. He has the athleticism to play on that island. It’s just not natural for him to do it as much."
