Details from Latavious Brini's arrest on a forgery charge
Georgia freshman Latavious Brini was arrested Tuesday following the issuing of a warrant for an incident that occurred at the Alps Shopping Center's Pet Supplies Inc.
The Athens-Clarke County Police Department alleges that Brini used a fake $100 bill to purchase $8 worth of merchandise and received $92 in change on July 14. It wasn't realized until later that the currency used was fake after the bank the store uses rejected it.
An Athens-Clarke County police representative stated that at the time of the transaction, Brini opened a rewards card with Pet Supplies Inc. under a false identity.
Eight days later on July 22, Brini entered Pet Supplies Inc. and used his own debit card for a purchase. The cashier notified the manager that the suspect who used the fake bill was in the store and linked Brini's debit card purchase to a separate rewards system account under his own name, which contained his UGA campus dorm room address.
Police noted that there was no video showing Brini taking part in the fraudulent transaction, although it could possibly be obtained through an investigation.
While the original incident report accuses Brini of second-degree forgery, Brini was arrested on a first-degree felony forgery charge Tuesday evening and was booked at 6:16 p.m. He released at 9:23 p.m. on a $5,700 bond.
This is the third Georgia arrest since the team wrapped up its regular season and SEC Championship win over Auburn. Hours after beating the Tigers, Natrez Patrick and Jayson Stanley were arrested on marijuana-related charges in Barrow County.
According to Georgia's game logs, Brini did not see game action in 2017, and is therefore on track to redshirt. He competed in high school at Mater Academy Charter in Hialeah, Florida.
