Georgia's Swift the latest addition to deep backfield
Of any position on the roster, Georgia boasts its best depth at running back.
The position goes five deep on scholarship and features one of the nation’s top tandems in Nick Chubb and Sony Michel. Brian Herrien proved to be a valuable back last season and Elijah Holyfield arrived as a four-star recruit.
Georgia has since added a high-prized running back in the recruiting class of 2017 in D’Andre Swift. Swift joined Georgia this summer and has already made a splash as both a running back and receiver.
Swift has joined Michel and Herrien as running backs working with the slot receivers during practice.
“D’Andre Swift is doing a great job just learning the offense,” Michel said. “He’s playing a major role. He’s got to learn two different positions as a freshman. That can be challenging. But he is doing a great job taking on that role.”
Michel didn't want to compare Swift to himself as a runner and receiver, saying the Philadelphia-area native is his own back.
It seems increasingly clear that Georgia head coach Kirby Smart and offensive coordinator Jim Chaney are looking for ways to get each of the running backs involved in some way. With all that talent, it makes sense for Georgia’s coaching to find ways to get each of the running backs involved.
“Everybody has to play a role in this offense,” Michel said. “It starts right here in camp. Everybody’s earning a position. Nobody’s spot is safe. Nick and I came back but you never know what happens with how SEC football is.”
