It was a big deal for Kirby Smart to see Brice Ramsey make an appearance at Camp Sunshine.

The Georgia football program made its annual trip to Camp Sunshine, a summer camp for children battling cancer located at Camp Twin Lakes, to spend time with those attending. Many of the children who attend Camp Sunshine are Georgia fans, considering the proximity of the camp to Athens.

And for Smart, seeing Ramsey, a backup quarterback who decided to return for his final year of eligibility, put a smile on some children’s faces was a good sight to see.

“He cares about Georgia,” Smart said. “For him to be here today with these kids and interact, that’s showing he’s giving back and he’s all in. It means a lot to see him here.”

With Ramsey back, there will be a preseason battle for the No. 2 quarterback job behind starter Jacob Eason. Ramsey initially elected to transfer before spring practice began before deciding to come back.

Since Ramsey wasn’t with the program during the spring -- although he did help out as a student assistant -- freshman early enrollee Jake Fromm took all of the reps with the second string.

Ramsey and Fromm figure to compete for second-string reps in August when preseason practice begins.

That stated, Smart doesn’t think Ramsey’s return changes how the coaching staff is approaching Fromm, considering Georgia theoretically could now have the opportunity to redshirt the Houston County product.

“I don’t think so. There will be good competition,” Smart said. “The good thing about the way we practice is all of them get reps. He’ll continue to get reps and all of those guys will rotate. It was hard for us to get quarterbacks in the spring. Now we have enough quarterbacks to get reps.”

In his career, Ramsey, a former four-star recruit out of Camden County, has thrown for 582 yards, four touchdowns and four interceptions.

With Ramsey back in the fold, Smart said it won’t be as worrisome if an injury occurs at the position.

“It keeps us where one injury doesn’t hurt us,” Smart said. “We can still have good guys.  He has experience, he’s played.”
