Georgia's Juwan Parker receives medical redshirt after missed season
Juwan Parker will have the opportunity to make up for lost time.
Parker received approval for a medical redshirt after missing the 2015-16 season with a partially torn Achilles tendon, Georgia announced Monday.
Parker injured his Achilles midway through the 2014-15 season but did play through the pain in a handful of games after. Hoping to return in time for the following season, he was unable to after dealing with a considerable amount of pain following Georgia's exhibition game against Armstrong State in early November.
Head coach Mark Fox then learned Parker's injury would take longer than initially expected, which kept him from playing in any game this past season.
"We are pleased that Juwan has officially been awarded a redshirt," Fox said. "We are eager and excited to see him back on the court."
The goal for Parker, a 6-foot-4 and 205-pound guard from Tulsa, Oklahoma, is to be full-go and 100 percent on June 1, which is when Georgia will begin summer workouts. During the 2014-15 season, Parker averaged 4.9 points and 3.7 rebounds per game.
Prior to a donor function in Savannah on May 16, Fox said Parker has gone home for the time being with time restrictions placed on what he is allowed to physically do.
"Really, the issue with Juwan is how much volume that Achilles tendon can handle," Fox said. "Right now, he's able to go for a full hour really hard. He looks like the old Juwan. We're kind of capping him right there and we're slowly building on that. Once we come back this summer, and hopefully by next summer, he'll be able to go two-and-a-half, three hours with no issue. He's really progressing well."
