Georgia-Marquette basketball game in 2016-17 season gets date
Georgia's football team hopes to be in the SEC Championship Game in early December. If so, the Georgia basketball team will provide an encore presentation on its home floor a day later.
The first game of a home-and-home series between Georgia and Marquette is scheduled for Dec. 4 at Stegeman Coliseum, according to the contract signed between the two schools and obtained by The Telegraph via an open records request.
Georgia head coach Mark Fox recently confirmed that the two schools would compete against each other, with the first of the two games taking place in Athens. The 2017-18 season game between the two schools does not have a date scheduled at this time but will take place at "Marquette University Arena," which presumably is the BMO Harris Bradley Center -- home of both Marquette and the NBA's Milwaukee Bucks.
Marquette finished last season 20-13 and did not participate in a postseason tournament.
The contract was agreed upon on May 10 and signed by both Georgia athletic director Greg McGarity and Marquette deputy athletic director Michael Broeker.
No money will exchange hands between programs unless the contract is broken, in which a $75,000 penalty will be assessed.
Georgia also has non-conference games scheduled at Clemson (Nov. 11), at Georgia Tech (Dec. 20) and at Oakland (Dec. 23). The Bulldogs are also participating in the CBE Hall of Fame Classic on Nov. 21 and 22.
