Former UGA swimmer Amanda Weir heading to third Olympics
Make it seven.
Georgia's total of swimming representatives on the 2016 U.S. Olympic Team has now reached seven as Amanda Weir qualified for the summer games on Friday. Weir placed third in the 100-meter freestyle in 53.75 seconds at the U.S. Olympic Trials in Omaha, Nebraska, giving her a spot on the 4x100-meter freestyle relay team.
This will be Weir's third-ever Olympics. She was a part of the silver-medal 4x100 freestyle team in 2004 and was a member of the bronze-medal winning relay team in 2012.
Weir was a member of the 2005 Georgia women's swimming team that won a national championship. It was the only season Weir participated with the Bulldogs in.
Weir joins Chase Kalisz, Jay Litherland, Olivia Smoliga, Allison Schmitt, Melanie Margalis and Hali Flickinger as current or former Georgia swimmers to clinch spots for this year's Olympics in Rio de Janeiro.
Gunnar Bentz is expected to be officially added as a relay alternate later this week.
Georgia, at the moment, has a total of 11 swimmers representing the program at this summer's Olympics. Georgia also has Brittany MacLean, Chantal Van Landeghem and Javier Acevedo on Canada's Olylmpic team, as well as Matias Koski on Finland's.
