Georgia's Aulden Bynum embracing position change from offensive tackle to tight end
Aulden Bynum wasn’t expecting to see any game action two weeks ago heading into the Florida game.
But as the Georgia football team was boarding its plane to Jacksonville, at least one coach stopped him and told him the news. The Bulldogs were going to play him at tight end against the Gators.
Bynum said it was something Georgia had him do in practice. However, he just didn’t know whether he’d be asked to play tight end in a game.
"We’d been working on it for weeks but I didn’t know we would use it though," Bynum said. "I didn’t even tell my parents until I saw them before we went into (EverBank Field). The first time they found out was when we got off the bus."
Bynum, 6-5 and 275 pounds, has pretty much been a tight end since. In the Florida and Kentucky games, Bynum saw roughly 15 snaps at the new position. He’s come in a good bit when Georgia’s wanted to run some power sets, providing an extra blocker for the run game.
Moving to tight end involved a jersey change as he’s had to ditch his No. 70 uniform for No. 41 – one he was given when suiting up for the Florida game.
However, this isn’t Bynum’s first move to tight end. Two years ago during spring practice, Bynum moved to tight end due to injuries at the position. Once players got healthy, he moved back to the offensive line.
Bynum isn’t sure if this will be the position he sticks at for the remainder of his time at Georgia. But as long as the coaches want him to play there, he’ll continue to do it without question.
“I’m just trying to do whatever they tell me to do,” Bynum said. “I say, ‘Yes sir’ and do it.”
