East Macon recreation project kicks off
Macon-Bibb County officials were on hand Thursday to celebrate a groundbreaking for the East Macon Recreation Center renovation project.
The facility, located at 3326 Ocmulgee East Blvd., will get a renovated concession stand, new T-ball field and repaired sidewalks. It's one of eight Macon-Bibb recreation and community center projects that will receive a total of about $20 million in upgrades. The money is from the special purpose local option sales tax.
"This is very exciting for east Macon-Bibb and all the people that use the center, and I'm very glad to see this work begin," Commissioner Elaine Lucas said in a news release. "For too many years, we didn't do enough for recreation, and with the (SPLOST), we can finally give the community, especially our children, the facilities they deserve."
