Four Macon Charter Academy board members resign
Four of the five members of the Macon Charter Academy board have resigned.
A letter sent to Bibb County Schools Superintedent Curtis Jones on Friday evening cited disagreement over terms of the contract with Renaissance School Services. The board voted Wednesday to enter into a contract with Renaissance to help the school get in good standing with the state.
"This was done in a good faith effort to satisfy the wishes of parents' (sic) and with high hopes of placing the organization in the best position of sustainability," the letter stated. "Upon receipt of the initial draft of the RSS Transition Agreement and the RSS Master Agreement, these members cannot agree to the conditions set forth. It is not our desire to move forward in this process. Therefore, we have decided that resigning is the best option for all parties involved."
The letter was signed by Lonnicia Maxwell, the board chair, Willie May, the co-chair, and board members Tim Jones and Steve DeGeorge.
The only board member who could be reached for comment Saturday was Leontine Espy, who was the only member who didn't resign.
She said she was not aware of the resignations, but she indicated she did not agree with it.
"I think if you made a commitment to help young people, then that's what you should do," she said.
