Student dies after medical emergency at summer school

A Houston County student died after sustaining a medical emergency during summer school.

The boy, whose name and age have not been released, was a student in the Extended School Year program at Thomson Middle School in Centerville, said Beth McLaughlin, Houston County’s director of community and school relations.

A school worker called 911 on June 6 when the student began having medical issues, and emergency medical services workers took him to the hospital. A school nurse was on campus at the time, McLaughlin said.

Centerville Police Chief Charles Hadden confirmed the death, and he said the Centerville Fire Department and EMS worked the scene.

He said there was “nothing criminal” related to the episode.
