Slain Mercer athlete Jibri Bryan had gun, indictment says

The men charged with killing a Mercer University basketball player Feb. 2 also are accused of stealing the player’s 9mm handgun and an undisclosed amount of cash, according to an indictment filed Tuesday in Bibb County Superior Court.

Authorities previously had not said whether 23-year-old Jibri Bryan was armed when he backed his Chevrolet Monte Carlo into a parking space at the Flash Foods at the corner of College and Forsyth Streets.

Contacted Tuesday and asked about his son having a gun, Tyrone Bryan said, “I had no knowledge of it.”

A Bibb County Sheriff's Office detective testified during a March hearing that 34-year-old Damion Deray Henderson tried to sell Bryan fake Xanax. When Bryan realized the drugs weren't genuine, he refused to buy them and was fatally shot.

Henderson and his alleged accomplice, 24-year-old Jarvis Miller, each blame the shooting on the other, authorities have said.

Tuesday’s indictment charges Henderson, a metro Atlanta man, and Miller, who lived in Macon, with three counts of felony murder and one count each of malice murder, aggravated assault, armed robbery and possession of a firearm during the commission of a felony.

Henderson additionally is charged with another count of felony murder and possession of a firearm by a convicted felon.

He was convicted of armed robbery in 2002 in Clayton County, according to the indictment.

The indictment alleges that Henderson and Miller possessed, and had the intent to distribute, “clear capsules containing a brown powder substance” that were unlabeled, a violation of the Georgia Controlled Substances Act.

Both men are being held at the county jail without bond.
