Man shot dead in east Macon
A 23-year-old Macon man was shot multiple times just before 6 p.m. Thursday and was pronounced dead at a local hospital.
Jarvis West, of McKay Drive, was wounded at Pine Ridge Apartments located at 1960 Clinton Road, which is off Gray Highway near Wood Valley Road, said Bibb County Coroner Leon Jones. Authorities found West outside behind an apartment, according to a news release from the Bibb County Sheriff's Office.
West was rushed to the Medical Center, Navicent Health, where he was pronounced dead just after 6:30 p.m., Jones said.
Less than an hour after the shooting, some neighbors crowded around the perimeter of the yellow, crime-scene tape asking about what happened.
Catrice Harvey, 17, said she was walking outside of her aunt's apartment, which is across the parking lot from the crime scene, when the shots were fired.
"When I was coming back up (to the apartment), I heard like four or five gunshots," Harvey said.
Harvey's aunt, 30-year-old Quinita Bonner, watched as investigators with the sheriff's crime scene unit took pictures and walked in and out of Apartment F. Bonner said she moved into the apartment complex in September.
"It's good over here," Bonner said. "Nothing like this has ever happened before."
Lt. Linda Howard, a public information officer for the sheriff's office, said witnesses were still being questioned late Thursday. Howard couldn't say who may have been present at the time of the shooting.
"I'm waiting on investigators so I can get that information," Howard said. "(The investigator) said it was chaotic, so once he sorts through everything and they figure out exactly what happened, then he'll call me and let me know what we're working with."
