Trial postponed for men charged in killings at Wings Cafe in Macon
The trial for three men charged in the Dec. 12 fight and shootout at Macon’s Wings Cafe has been postponed.
Jury selection was set to begin Monday for Vertuice Wall Jr., 39, and Emmanuel McGhee, 28, who each are charged with multiple counts of murder, aggravated assault, and gang and gun charges; and for 29-year-old Derek Taylor who is charged with multiple counts of aggravated assault and gang charges.
The FBI provided new evidence in the case Tuesday and Wall’s attorney withdrew a motion he’d previously filed for a speedy trial, said District Attorney David Cooke.
The motion was the driving force for the case to go to trial in October.
As a result of Tuesday’s events, the trial for all three men was continued.
A new trial date hasn’t been set and it’s unclear how many of the 11 men charged in the case may go to trial when it’s rescheduled.
Wall was indicted earlier this year on an ammunition-related charge in U.S. District Court for the Northern District of Georgia.
During a Tuesday pretrial hearing in the Wings Cafe case, prosecutor Sandra Matson said another federal case is pending against Wall.
Three men died following the December alleged gang melee at Wings Cafe, a now-shuttered Bloomfield Drive nightclub.
Surveillance footage reportedly shows alleged members of two Macon street gangs, the Blacc Team and the Crips, fighting and exchanging gunfire, authorities have said. Corey Hollingshed, 25, George Henley, 34, and Derrick Jackson, 38, were fatally shot. Nastajah Taylor, 23, was shot four times, but she survived.
