Macon man indicted in 2011 killing

Bibb County grand jurors indicted a 24-year-old Macon man Tuesday in the 2011 shooting death of a man in east Macon.

Deonte Marquis Kitchens, of Bowman Street, is charged with murder in the Oct. 29, 2011, killing of 32-year-old Alveno Culver. Culver was shot in the chest while sitting inside his car in the 800 block of Little Short Street, located between Cowan and Hall streets.

Police had difficulty with witness cooperation early in the investigation, said prosecutor Dorothy Hull.

“We continued to investigate the case,” she said. “We didn’t forget about the case.”

In the ensuing three years, police and the district attorney’s office developed additional evidence, gathering enough to present to a grand jury for an indictment, Hull said.

Kitchens also is charged with possession of a firearm by a first offender probationer, possession of a firearm during the commission of a felony and three counts of violation of the Street Gang Terrorism and Prevention Act, according to the indictment filed in Bibb County Superior Court.

The indictment alleges Kitchens is associated with the GDM criminal street gang.

Kitchens pleaded guilty to burglary in 2010 as a first offender. He was sentenced to complete a probation boot camp program and eight years on probation, according to court records.

A second man, 24-year-old Shundracee Jacountae Miller, was indicted Sept. 23 on allegations he made false statements to an investigator regarding the killing investigation.

Miller, of Plant Street, is charged with four counts of making a false statement and two counts of obstruction, according to court records.

Among the allegations, Miller is accused of making false statements about his whereabouts on the day of the shooting and about his relationship with a suspect and a witness.

Kitchens is being held at the county jail without bond. Miller is being held on a $5,150 bond, according to jail records.
