A Warner Robins man has been charged with murder in the death of his infant son last year.
Charles Michael Taylor, 26, was arrested by Houston County deputies Thursday, charged with murder and aggravated assault.
Sgt. Todd Shepherd said the infant was hurt Dec. 14, 2013, and never regained consciousness until his death. The child, identified in court records as Peyton Taylor, was 11 months old when he died a week later.
“It was an incident where he told police and hospital staff that he was holding his son and (he) fell to the floor and hit his head,” Shepherd said. “As a result of medical findings and things of that nature over the past few months, it was determined ... that that couldn’t have caused that type of injury. The medical findings didn’t match the story, and so when I had confirmation on the medical findings, the warrants were issued.”
The medical reports said the child died of “severe trauma to the head,” Shepherd said. The incident happened at Taylor’s Warner Robins home.
An arrest warrant accuses the father of “causing severe trauma to the victim’s skull, causing multiple fractures and brain swelling, rendering him unresponsive and leading to his eventual death.”
Peyton Taylor’s obituary said he was nicknamed “Monkey.” It described him as “an adventurous baby boy who loved to laugh and smile, touching many hearts and lives.”
In court and jail records, the father is listed as 6-foot-4, weighing about 205 pounds.
It wasn’t clear Monday whether Taylor had been arraigned yet. District Attorney George Hartwig declined to comment.
Shepherd said he could not discuss whether there was any evidence of earlier abuse.
Taylor’s girlfriend was home at the time of the incident, but the child’s biological mother was not with the child. Shepherd said he does not expect other charges.
