Need help with ABC’s of local government? Perry program may help

In many communities, it is not uncommon for citizens to lack knowledge about how their local local government functions.

The city of Perry hopes to change that with an initiative it is launching called the Your City Program.

This program will allow select Perry residents to gain a new perspective onn their local government while learning about various departments and government processes. Participants will attend classes from 5:30-7:30 p.m. on the second and fourth Thursday of each month.

Classes will cover a few of the departments around the city. The activities and location will vary depending on the focus of the class.

"It is a great way to get people involved in what goes on in the city," said Ellen Palmer, director of the Your City Program.

According to a press release, the following topics will be discussed over the six-week period: city leadership and government, economic and community growth, a high quality of life, essential local government services, a safe community, and an informed and engaged community.

Those interested in applying must be residents of Perry and at least 18 years old. The application can be found online at www.perry-ga.gov. It must either be emailed to Ellen Palmer at ellen.palmer@perry-ga.gov or mailed to City of Perry, Attn: Ellen Palmer, 1211 Washington St., Perry, GA 31069.

The application deadline is July 10. Applicants will be notified of their acceptance by July 14. There is a limited class size of 20 people and classes will begin August 10.
