Old Book Sale offers Houston a reading material world
Friends of the Library is a local group of tireless advocates believing that a strong library is a valuable intellectual, cultural, educational and recreational resource in any community. It’s not by accident that Houston County has three libraries, one each in the Perry, Centerville and Warner Robins. Friends have been assisting for years in developing programs to meet the needs of the community through volunteer activities and fundraising for the library system. The biggest event of the year is the annual Old Book Sale.
This year’s book sale will be April 27-29 at the Georgia National Fairgrounds and Agricenter’s Georgia Grown Building near the clock tower. The fairgrounds are located on Interstate 75 at exit 135. Attendees are asked to use the west gate entrance. Parking is free, and there is wheelchair accessibility to the building. An online map is available at www.houpl.org. under the Friends of the Library pull down menu.
Hours on the Thursday opening day are 10 a.m.-8 p.m. There’s a $5 entry fee of $5 that day. Admission is free the other days of the sale, with a half price sale all day that Saturday. Hours on April 28 are 9 a.m-8 p.m. and on April 29 they are 9 a.m.-3 p.m.
This year, more than 90,000 books are available in over 60 categories. Friends make it easy to leisurely browse through the air conditioned facility by providing a map of book categories at the door. There are benches along the way and restrooms on the premises. Also on the amenities list are book carrier carts available to rent.
There will be books about the history of the South and of Georgia, author sets, individual novels, biographies, children’s books, cookbooks, military books and an array of art/music/photography books.
Five truckloads of books will be delivered for the sale, the majority selling for 50 cents to $2. Since 2005, Friends of the Library has raised over $326,715 to purchase materials for all three Houston County libraries.
