A fire that destroyed a Houston County home Sunday afternoon was blamed on a fish fry that went wrong.

Fire Chief Jimmy Williams said he isn’t sure exactly what happened, but he said the fire started in the kitchen and was the result of something that went awry while frying fish.

The fire occurred at 200 Morning Dove Lane off Smithfield Church Road, south of Centerville. Williams said three trucks and 16 firefighters responded, but the fire was already in the attic by the time they arrived.

The man and woman inside the home, he said, were able to get out without injury. He said they rented the home.
