A teenager drowned at Amerson River Park on Sunday.
A release from the Bibb County Sheriff’s Office identified the victim as Marcos Mendez Perez, 17. Bibb County Coroner Leon Jones said Perez lived on Tidewater Circle in Macon but is originally from Guatemala.
The release stated that shortly before 6 p.m. someone reported that Perez had been on a float near one of the picnic areas and slipped off. He went under and never resurfaced. He had been at the park with family and friends.
An off-duty Bibb County deputy, park employees and others went into the water to search for Perez, the release stated. Georgia Department of Natural Resources rangers and a Georgia State Patrol helicopter also assisted in the search. At 8:19 p.m. the Macon-Bibb County Fire Department dive team recovered the body.

Jones said the death has been ruled an accidental drowning.
