Macon-Bibb, MTA officials look into possibility of electric buses

Macon-Bibb County and Macon Transit Authority officials Wednesday got to see firsthand a demonstration of what an electric bus could mean for the city.

Officials with the New Flyer bus company took them on a tour of a few blocks through downtown in a 40-foot, 38-seat bus that runs completely on electricity.

If local officials decide to pursue buying electric buses, they would try to use federal grant money. The buses likely would first be used along the Second Street Corridor, going from the Macon Coliseum along Second Street to Mercer University.

A second bus company, Proterra Inc., will demonstrate an electric bus for local officials July 6.
