Two Kmart stores in Middle Georgia will close as part of the company's national downsizing plan.
The store on Columbia Street in Milledgeville and the store on Hillcrest Parkway in Dublin are slated to close by mid-April, Howard Riefs, director of corporate communications for Sears Holding Corp., said in an email. Sears Holding is the parent company for Kmart and Sears.
Liquidation sales will begin Sunday.
"Store closures are part of a series of actions we're taking to reduce on-going expenses, adjust our asset base and accelerate the transformation of our business model," he said.
The Milledgeville store has 63 employees and the Dublin store has 71.
Workers who are eligible will received severance and have the opportunity to apply for open positions at area Sears or Kmart stores, he said. Most employees are part time or hourly.
