It’s great to find a place that reminds you of good times. The Pickle Barrel Cafe and Sports Pub in Gray is just that kind of place. For sports fans, it’s a great place to gather with friends before or after a real game or to watch one on TV.
For pub fans, it has the feel of a neighborhood pub, a place where families are as welcome as adults. For everyone else, it has a relaxed air of a place where you can be yourself and have a good time.
The Pickle has pretty good food, too. Most of it is your standard sports bar food, like potato skins, onion rings and burgers. If you’re in the mood for something different, try the jalapeño-stuffed shrimp appetizer, the Firecracker Shrimp, or the Bottle Caps, which are beer battered jalapeño slices that are deep fried and served with ranch dressing to cool things off.
The burgers are tasty and come in an array of varieties. The chili cheeseburger comes with -- you guessed it -- meaty chili and cheddar cheese oozing out the sides, served with a side for $7.19. The California burger comes with guacamole, pepper jack cheese and jalapeños (those keep coming up) for $7.59, and the Ultimate burger is smothered with sautéed onions, peppers, mushrooms, bacon, cheddar and Swiss, all for $7.99.
Never miss a local story.
On the lighter side, the Pickle has six kinds of wraps, each served with a side for about $7. The Red Neck burrito is a chopped-up chili-cheese hot dog; Nard’s Spicy Steak wrap contains seasoned steak and ranch; and the Chipotle Lime burrito contains your choice of chicken or steak with black beans and salsa.
If you’re feeling fishy, the Pickle Barrel has several items that contain grouper, from a fried basket to the grilled plate to the grouper wrap.
They also have tons of sandwiches and salads. Highlights of the sandwiches include the turkey Reuben on grilled rye, the Memphis cheesesteak with smoky sweet barbecue and cheese, and the Shrimp Poboy loaded with butterfly shrimp and a zesty Creole sauce.
Of course, there are wings, nachos and loaded potatoes -- anything you would expect at a sports pub. Some of the prices seem a little high (don’t they everywhere?) but the service is great and the food is fresh.
If you live in or are heading through Gray, you should absolutely give Pickle Barrel a try.
