What would your favorite author drink?
The Ga. 96 area in Houston County continues to grow, and the latest addition is a charming little coffee shop that is big on family and small on price.
Harry Potter fans will go nuts for Between Friends Cafe’s Rowlings, hot or cold butter beer with or without coffee. I ordered the hot Rowling with coffee and was asked which “house” I belonged to. I’d never really thought about it so they asked my favorite color. I won’t spoil the surprise, but my drink belonged in House Slytherin.
Literature fans also will love the selection of drinks named for authors such as William Faulkner, Mark Twain and Maya Angelou. Jane Austen is a white chocolate latte, Edgar Allen Poe is a black espresso, and, believe it or not, Harper Lee is an Oreo frappe. Maybe you are clever enough to figure out why the C.S. Lewis is an iced butterscotch and the Hemingway is a sweet Cuban.
Their teas are carefully named for famous writers as well. Kipling is a chai, Suzanne Collins is passion fruit, Amy Tan is a green tea, and local author Frances Mayes is a Tuscan herbal lemon. Of course, T.S. Eliot is an Earl Grey, and Chaucer is the English breakfast.
As a family cafe, Between Friends has a table just for little ones (one set up a coloring office during our visit) and a special menu of non-coffee drinks. A frothed hot chocolate is named for Shel Silverstein, Dr. Suess is plain frothed milk, and the A.A. Milne is a chocolate chip cookie drink.
The food is mostly functional by comparison. The quiche had been under the heat for a while but was still tasty. The roast beef sandwich was a few slices of meat on toasted white bread. The grilled cheese might be good with the daily soup, and French toast and pancakes are available all day.
Goodies for your coffee change daily. During our visit they had cinnamon rolls, pumpkin cookies, pecan maple scones and brownies. We tried the Dessert in a Jar — we had the brownie with vanilla ice cream, but there are several others to choose from.
Between Friends is a cute little place to meet up with your literary friends. The food may not be extraordinary, but the cozy atmosphere makes it worth a trip.
