Hear Better Than Ezra’s Kevin Griffin at the Cox
“It’s going to be mind-blowing” is how Better Than Ezra frontman Kevin Griffin summarized his upcoming show in Macon. With sales in excess of 30 million copies of songs that Griffin has performed, written or produced, fans can see where Griffin gets his confidence.
“If people know me, it’s likely from my band Better Than Ezra, but they might not know that I’ve written songs with and for many other people, including Taylor Swift, Train, Sugarland, Barenaked Ladies, Christina Perri, James Blunt and Howie Day,” Griffin said. “When I do my solo show, in addition to playing the songs from Better Than Ezra, I also play a lot of songs that they might not know are mine.”
Griffin will perform that solo show at the Cox Capitol Theatre on Saturday night.
“My solo shows are really fun,” Griffin said, “because people will hear songs that they know, but they will also hear them in a way that they haven’t heard them before. The songs will be acoustic.”
Some of Griffin’s hits include Better Than Ezra’s “Good,” “Extra Ordinary,” “Juicy” and “Breathless,” as well as Sugarland’s country hit “Like Glue” and Howie Day’s “Collide.”
Griffin said he likes to keep the crowd entertained.
“This isn’t a subtle and muted performance,” Griffin said about his show. “I do play some songs by myself, but my nature is not a low-key singer-songwriter vibe, hanging out on the stage and talking a lot. I travel with a very gifted percussionist, Jenn Lowe. She is amazing. This will be a very up-tempo and upbeat show. There is a lot of crowd participation, some ill-advised covers, a few dance moves, and a lot of fun. My favorite performers are the ones who entertain and that is what this show is.”
Griffin, who grew up in New Orleans, was born here in Georgia.
“I have a lot of friends and family in Georgia. I love the Cox Capitol Theatre ever since I saw a show in it years ago. I think it was an Allman Brothers Band show of some kind, but I loved the space and am excited to perform in it now. I love the vibes and feel of it,” he said. “It’s the right mix of Southern town and music that makes it easy for me to guarantee that if you come to this show and spend your Saturday evening with me, you’ll have a great time, have some laughs, go home and feel good about yourself.”
