Mingle with musicians and artists at annual block party
A small group of jazz lovers created the Jazz Association of Macon in 1986. Little did they expect that their passion would translate into a legacy of concerts, shared music appreciation and scholarships. For the 13th year, the Jazz Association shares its passion for the arts with the community at its annual Jazz and Arts on Riverdale festival, happening Saturday.
The Middle Georgia State University Jaz Nights will kick off the musical lineup at noon, followed by the JAM All Stars at 1:20 p.m., the World Famous Walnut Street Dixie, Racing and Marching Society Jazz Band at 2:30 p.m. and headliners Mike Frost Band featuring Lauren Meccia at 4 p.m.
The Mike Frost Band has become a jazz staple in the Carolinas and beyond, regularly appearing on stage in California and in Frost’s native New York. “We are excited to have them perform as the lead act for the 13th Jazz and Arts on Riverdale festival,” spokesman Tom Woodbery said. “This is a large block party, really.”
In addition to music, there will be arts vendors, food, and events for kids.
“We expect 25 artist vendors on display along Riverdale Drive selling their wares. It’s a family-friendly event, and we encourage kids to attend. There are several kids events aimed at including and entertaining them, like face painting, coloring, games and other events,” Woodberry said. “We will have two food trucks from Francar’s Buffalo Wings of Macon and Sofrito Fusion from Warner Robins.”
Additionally, the festival will highlight the work of artist Priscilla Esser, and her painting of Billie Holliday will grace the Jazz Association’s T-shirt and bags.
To ensure that the future of music remains bright, Woodbery announced that two scholarships will be given to two recent graduates from Macon-Bibb County high schools. Quentin Hurlburt, who is currently attending Middle Georgia State University, and Malik Lyder, who is currently attending Kennesaw State University, will be awarded scholarships at 3:45 p.m.
“This is our major yearly event and all funds go to scholarships and to pay for performances throughout the community. We hold a membership drive and sell T-shirts and posters, too. This is the best chance to meet us and mingle and join in the fun,” he said.
