Mercer opens its 11-game football schedule Sept. 1 against Southern Conference foe The Citadel, and the Bears' non-conference schedule is highlighted by a trip to Atlanta to face Georgia Tech on Sept. 10.

Mercer's schedule, which was released Monday, includes five home games.

"I am excited about the 2016 schedule and the steps that our program will be taking with this challenging slate," Mercer head coach Bobby Lamb said. "We have the opportunity to take on an ACC program and will also host five games at Five Star Stadium in front of an incredible fan base that is one of the best in the FCS."

The Bears return 10 starters on both sides of the ball from last year's 5-6 team that earned the program's first win over a top-five team, a 17-14 decision over No. 3 Chattanooga.

For the second time in three seasons, Mercer will open its season on a Thursday night. The Bears are 3-0 in their season openers, and they are 15-6 at Five Star Stadium.

The Bears' other home games are against Tennessee Tech, Western Carolina, East Tennessee State and Furman (in the season finale). The Bears' game with East Tennessee State will count as a Southern Conference game this season.

Four of Mercer's games in October will be played on the road.
