Mercer team went through its second straight practice in full pads in a two-hour workout Monday at Five Star Stadium.
“We had another strong practice (Monday) morning,” head coach Bobby Lamb said. “Our defense came out with a lot of energy, and that leads to big plays. I was very encouraged to see the defense come out and fly to the ball, picking up tackles for loss and a few forced turnovers.
“Offensively, we weren’t quite as sharp (Monday), but we were able to make some plays in the pass game to get into the end zone.”
Sophomore wide receiver Avery Ward had two touchdown catches, while junior offensive lineman Bret Niederreither continues to be impressive after switching over from the defensive line.
Junior safety Lendell Arnold and freshman defensive back Stephen Houzah stood out for the defense.
