Breaking down the Middle Georgia NFL draft

Bud Dupree

High school: Wilkinson County

College: Kentucky

Position: Outside linebacker/defensive end

Projection: First round

Drafted: First round, No. 22 to Pittsburgh

Analysis: Dupree was projected by some to land in the top 10, but Pittsburgh, which for years has been known for its pressure defense, could be the perfect landing spot for Dupree.

Nick Marshall

High school: Wilcox County

College: Auburn

Position: Cornerback

Projection: Sixth round

Drafted: Undrafted free agent, signed with Jacksonville

Analysis: Making the switch from quarterback apparently kept Marshall out of the draft. But his athleticism and talents will make him a viable option for the Jaguars.

Keith Mumphery

High school: Dooly County

College: Michigan State

Position: Wide receiver

Projection: Undrafted free agent

Drafted: Fifth round, No. 175 to Houston

Analysis: Mumphery has been overlooked throughout the draft process, so much so that the Associated Press had him as “Keith Murphy” in its NFL draft results list. But he has the talent to make the team and a mark with Houston.

Steven Nelson

High school: Northside

College: Oregon State

Position: Cornerback

Projection: Third round

Drafted: Third round, No. 98 to Kansas City

Analysis: The Chiefs are good, but not great, at cornerback, so that should open a spot for Nelson, an aggressive, strong and talented corner.

DeAndre Smelter

High school: Tattnall Square

College: Georgia Tech

Position: Wide receiver

Projection: Seventh round

Drafted: Fourth round, No. 132 to San Francisco

Analysis: Smelter might not be ready for the start of training camp as he recovers from an ACL injury suffered against Georgia in November. But once he is ready, there will be plenty of chances with the 49ers, who continue to search for playmakers on the outside.

Jeff Whitaker

High school: Warner Robins

College: Auburn

Position: Defensive tackle

Projection: Undrafted free agent

Drafted: Undrafted free agent, remains unsigned

Analysis: Injury concerns reportedly kept Whitaker from being drafted.
