Dublin’s Hester tied for lead at U.S. Amateur qualifier

Dublin’s Dean Hester fired a 4-under-par 68 to tie for the lead after the first round of a U.S. Amateur Championship qualifier Monday at the Brickyard at Riverside.

Fifty-two players made the 18-hole cut and will play 18 more holes Tuesday to determine the five qualifiers for the U.S. Amateur.

The other Middle Georgia players to make the cut are Macon’s Coleman Tidwell Jr. at 74, Warner Robins’ Shawn Hodge at 75 and Macon’s Thomas Holmes at 76.

The 112th U.S. Amateur Championshipwill be held Aug. 13-19 at Cherry Hills Country Club in Cherry Hills Village, Colo.
