Tough weekend

It wasn't a good weekend for the Atlanta sports teams.

The Atlanta Braves continued to struggle, but at least they won a game in their three-game series against the NL East leading Philadelphia Phillies. It would have been hard to expect the Braves to do much better than that, especially with Jason Heyward missing most of the series. And really, Heyward is pretty much the whole Braves offense right now.

But the Braves' season-long struggles continue. At 13-18, the Braves are six games out of first in the East, but things get even worse when you look at the entire NL. Atlanta is next to last in the league, only ahead of Houston.

Atlanta has been good at home, winning eight of their 12 games at Turner Field, but the Braves need to find a way to win games on the road. Their 5-14 road record is the worst in the NL.

Then there are the Hawks. Down 2-0 in their series against the Orlando Magic, the Hawks at least had the hope of playing at home in Game 3. But that hope went out the window quickly.

Atlanta was blown out 105-75 and was never really competitive at any time during the game. The series continues tonight, and it looks like tonight's game will be the end of the Hawks' season.

And it could be the end of this team as a group. Head coach Mike Woodson might be looking for another job after the season, and Joe Johnson is going to be a free agent after the season. So the Hawks probably will take on a new look after this season.

And it's probably time they should. Yes, they have improved from the 13-win team several years ago, but Woodson hasn't shown he can take this team to the next level, and the Hawks really need to see if they can get there.

Johnson is likely costing himself a lot of money in the playoffs. He has been awful the past few weeks and simply can't be a max-contract type of player on the free agent market if he is going to perform the way he has the past few weeks.
