Howard doesn't have its own football stadium, but a donation from Georgia Power just might be the first step toward building one.
Georgia Power delivered four 105-foot power poles and the lights to go along with them Wednesday. The lights and poles came from a plant that recently closed.
Plans are to install the lights around the existing track at Howard.
"That was a great gift," Howard football head coach and athletics director Barney Hester said. "I imagine that donation was $150,000, and they donated their people to get it over here. It was a tremendous offering by Georgia Power."
For now, Hester hopes the lights will allow Bibb County public high schools to have use of a second field to play soccer games in the spring. Right now, the only stadium used for soccer among Bibb County public high schools is the Ed DeFore Sports Complex.
There aren't concrete plans to build a football stadium at Howard, Hester said, but he said he would like to see that take place.
"You've got to crawl before you can walk," Hester said. "Not one penny of taxpayer money was used to make this happen.
"One day, I hope we can play here. That day will come if it's meant to be."
