Former Mercer and Tattnall Square football player Hank Avery is looking to take on something new: professional wrestling.
Avery, who played parts of two seasons with Mercer, was named Monday as one of 40 finalists for the television reality series “WWE Tough Enough,” a televised competition that awards the winner a one-year WWE contract.
The finalists will compete Wednesday-Friday at the WWE Performance Center in Orlando, Florida, in a three-day mini-camp. Thirteen finalists will be chosen for the “Tough Enough” series.
The mini-camp will be the subject of a WWE Network show, “Tough Enough Competition Special,” which will air at 8 p.m. on Tuesday.
The first episode of the “WWE Tough Enough” series airs June 23 on USA Network.
