The Veterans pitching staff has been dominant throughout the GHSA Class AAAA baseball playoffs.
One more series like that, and the Warhawks will play for the championship.
Veterans hosts Whitewater in the semifinals starting Monday. The first game of the day’s doubleheader begins at 5 p.m. The third game, if necessary, would be played Tuesday.
Veterans is 21-11, while Whitewater is 27-5. Both teams have gone 6-1 through their first three series in the playoffs.
Veterans swept Cairo and Northwest Whitfield before beating St. Pius X in a three-game series. Whitewater swept Chamblee and North Hall sandwiched around a three-game series with Pike County.
Veterans’ pitching staff has been key. The Warhawks have surrendered more than one run in only one game in the playoffs -- a 4-2 loss in their first game against St. Pius X. Veterans has surrendered eight runs in the playoffs and has recorded two shutouts.
The Warhawks have ridden the arms of Preston Sparks and Ryan Johnson as a 1-2 punch on the mound, with stints by Tyler Daughtry, Griff Faircloth, Logan Arnett and Tyler Hunt.
Whitewater’s pitching has been strong, as well, allowing 10 runs in the playoffs.
Veterans, which has won eight straight at home, is in the semifinals for the second straight year, while Whitewater didn’t make the playoffs a year ago.
