Athletes from Peach County, Fitzgerald and FPD won state championships in the GHSA boys track and field meet Thursday in Jefferson, and several area teams are high in their classification’s standings.
Fitzgerald is first in Class AA and FPD second in Class A private.
The Purple Hurricane have 35 points, 14 points ahead of Thomasville, with Bleckley County, Lamar County and Vidalia in the top 10.
FPD is 9½ points behind Athens Christian and 10 in front of Athens Academy.
Peach County is 10th in Class AAA.
Two points separate Twiggs County, GMC and Hancock Central from 7-9 in Class A public, with 11th-place Montgomery County right there, as well.
FPD’s Robby Watson snagged a pair of titles, winning the Class A private shot put and discus.
Fitzgerald’s Kelton Williams was first in the high jump and teammate Trey Graham first in the triple jump.
Peach County’s Malcolm Lowe was the state champ in the Class AAA triple jump, with the area going 1-2-3 in the event. Central’s Carlos Ferguson and Rutland’s Brandon Bawn followed Lowe.
Middle Georgia had at least four point-winners in several events: Class AAA triple jump (three); Class AA high jump and triple jump (four), Class A public long jump (four), discus and shot put (three).
The meet resumes Friday with preliminaries in the sprints and relays, as well as finals in the distance races. The rest of the championships will be decided Saturday.
