High school notebook: Stratford boys soccer now playing Saturday

The Stratford boys soccer team won’t be facing a quick turnaround for its GHSA Class A championship contest against Atlanta International, after all.

Originally scheduled to play at 2:30 p.m. on Thursday at Mercer’s Five Star Stadium, the Class A boys title game switched places with the Class AAA girls championship on the three-day schedule. As a result, Stratford will now take on Atlanta International at noon on Saturday.

The remainder of Thursday’s schedule: Class A girls (Hebron Christian vs. Fellowship Christian) at noon, Class AAA girls (Westminster vs. Blessed Trinity) at 2:30 p.m., Class AAAA girls (Marist vs. St. Pius X) at 5 p.m. and Class AAAA boys (St. Pius X vs. Cross Keys) at 7:30 p.m.

Friday’s contests: Class AA girls (Greater Atlanta Christian vs. Lovett) at noon, Class AA boys (Greater Atlanta Christian vs. Wesleyan) at 2:30 p.m., Class AAAAA girls (Starr’s Mill vs. Northgate) at 5 p.m. and Class AAAAA boys (Allatoona vs. Dalton) at 7:30 p.m.

Saturday’s action: Class A boys (Stratford vs. Atlanta International) at noon, Class AAA boys (West Hall vs. Calhoun or Decatur) at 2:30 p.m., Class AAAAAA girls (Lambert vs. Grayson) at 5 p.m. and Class AAAAAA boys (Duluth vs. Parkview or Brookwood) at 7:30 p.m.

A walk-off single by Caleb Ray lifted Fitzgerald to a 5-4 win over Heard County on Wednesday in the GHSA Class AA baseball quarterfinals.

After splitting a doubleheader Tuesday, Heard County scored a pair of runs in the first and two more in the fourth to take a 4-0 lead in Wednesday’s decisive game. Fitzgerald climbed back in it in the bottom of the fifth with a three-run inning, with doubles by Matthew Howell, Bailey Alexander and Noah McMinn fueling the rally.

Trailing by a run entering the bottom of the seventh, Johnny Croley led off with a double. McMinn drove Croley home with a base hit to tie it, and he advanced to second on a sacrifice by Ryan Davis. Ray’s one-out hit to right drove McMinn in with the winning run.

Fitzgerald travels to Wesleyan for the semifinal series that begins Monday.

Piedmont is also still going in Class AA. It hosts Southwest Georgia this week.

In Class AAA, Westfield travels to Deerfield-Windsor and Gatewood hosts Valwood.
