Former Northside High School standout Steven Nelson was chosen in the third round of the NFL draft Friday by the Kansas City Chiefs.
Nelson was a second-team All-Pac 12 selection as a defensive back for the Oregon State Beavers last season. He transferred to Oregon State in 2013 from the College of the Sequoias in California after initially committing to Georgia.
Nelson was an All-Middle Georgia performer in 2010 for the Eagles and also played at Houston County.
VETERANS, PERRY MOVE AHEAD IN PLAYOFFS
Veterans High School and Perry High School both advanced to the second round of the GHSA class-AAAA baseball playoffs after series victories last week.
The Warhawks swept two games from Cairo by 2-0 and 8-2 decisions on the back of strong starting pitching performances by Preston Sparks and Ryan Johnson. Power-hitting first baseman Leyton Pinckney drove in five runs in the final game of the series.
Veterans will host Northwest-Whitfield in a double-header Wednesday. The Bruins are the No. 2 seed in region 7-AAAA and advanced by sweeping Madison County 4-2 and 4-2.
It took Perry three games to get past Cook in its opening series, but the Panthers rolled in the finale by a 18-3 score after dropping the first game 8-5 in 10 innings and winning the second 12-0.
Perry pounded out 18 hits in game three on its way to the mercy rule victory.
The Panthers will now head on the road Wednesday to face Buford, which is the top seed out of region 8-AAAA.
The Wolves swept Heritage Catholic 10-8 and 8-1.
HOUSTON COUNTY HIGH SOCCER TEAM STILL UNBEATEN
The Houston County High School boys soccer team continued its unbeaten season with a 7-1 rout of Northside-Columbus in the first round of the GHSA class-AAAAA playoffs last week.
Prolific goal scorer Steven Moore added three more to his career record total while Jonathan Scruggs added two.
Houston County hosts No. 5 ranked Riverwood on Wednesday. The Raiders defeated Lanier 4-0 in its opening round match.
