Fitzgerald back in a familiar place

Fitzgerald had a string of 10-win seasons snapped last year when the Purple Hurricane slipped to 6-5-1.

There has been a rebound this year. Fitzgerald is 11-1 heading into Friday's GHSA Class AA quarterfinal against Pace Academy, and the Purple Hurricane are ranked fourth in Class AA.

Against Pace Academy, Fitzgerald will be looking to advance to the semifinals for the first time since 2009. Fitzgerald is just shy of an undefeated record, losing by three Oct. 3 to Thomasville.

Senior quarterback Gerald Morgan is leading the way for Fitzgerald. He is 50 yards shy of the 2,000-yard rushing mark, and he has thrown the ball for 1,120 yards with 13 touchdowns and five interceptions.

Pace Academy (7-5) is unranked, edging Jefferson County 57-50 last week to advance. The winner faces the Greater Atlanta Christian-Vidalia winner.
