For only the third time in program history and the first time in 20 years, West Laurens will be playing in a GHSA football playoff quarterfinal Friday when the Radiers travel to St. Pius X.
West Laurens (9-3) has never advanced beyond the quarterfinals. The Raiders, ranked 10th in the GHSA Class AAAA poll, take on a St. Pius program that is in the quarterfinals for the fifth time in six years.
St. Pius (10-2) is a team that likes to run the football. The Golden Lions have run for at least 300 yards in four of their past five games, rushing for 423 yards in last Friday's 52-20 second-round playoff win over Eastside. The team's season high is 527 yards in a 63-32 win Oct. 24 over Arabia Mountain.
There is no one dominant runner for St. Pius. Eleven players have scored via the run game, with nine players having recorded at least 100 rushing yards for the season. The team's yardage leader, senior fullback/linebacker Dalton Wilson, has run for 742 yards and 13 touchdowns.
