GHSA PLAYOFFS: 5 teams to watch Friday night

Here are five Middle Georgia teams to watch as the GHSA playoffs start this week (The list doesn’t include Houston County, which played Thursday night, or Class A teams, which begin play next week):

MACON COUNTY BULLDOGS

8-2, first place in Region 4-AA.

Opponent: Dublin (6-4).

Of note: Macon County has won one state title. ... Friday marks Macon County’s first home playoff game since 2007. ... The Bulldogs have won six straight games, including beating Lamar County last week for the region title. ... Macon County recorded three shutouts in the regular season. ... Friday’s game is the first meeting between the two programs.

NORTHSIDE EAGLES

9-1, first place in Region 2-AAAAA

Opponent: Northside-Columbus (4-6).

Of note: Northside has won two state titles. ... The Eagles won their final six games of the regular season, including beating Houston County in a thriller last week to win the region title. ... Northside has won its previous two meetings with Northside-Columbus. ... The Eagles have won at least 10 games in every season since finishing 9-4 in 1997.

PEACH COUNTY TROJANS

10-0; first place in Region 2-AAA.

Opponent: Appling County (7-3).

Of note: Peach County has won three state titles. ... The Trojans allowed just 73 points during the regular season and had three shutouts. ... Peach County leads the all-time series with Appling County 5-1. ... The Trojans haven’t lost a first-round playoff game since 2008.

WASHINGTON COUNTY GOLDEN HAWKS

10-0; first place in Region 3-AAA.

Opponent: Jackson-Atlanta (7-3).

Of note: Washington County has won three state titles. ... The Golden Hawks lost in the championship game last season. ... Washington County surrendered just 87 points during the regular season, and it scored at least 40 points nine times (and reached the 70s twice). ... Friday’s game is the first meeting between the two programs.

WESTSIDE SEMINOLES

9-1, second place in Region 2-AAA.

Opponent: Dodge County (8-2).

Of note: Westside has never won a state title. ... The Seminoles have scored at least 31 points in all nine of their wins. ... Westside hasn’t won a playoff game since 2009. ... Friday’s game is the first meeting between the two programs.
