This weekend’s high school football capsules

TOP FIVE

PEACH COUNTY AT WARNER ROBINS

Game time: 7:30 p.m.

Series history: Tied at 3.

Last meeting: 2013, Warner Robins won 54-21.

Key Demons: WR/S Marquez Callaway, Jr.; DE Stephone Raybon, Sr.; RB Jacquan Burns, Sr.; G Chandler Jones, Jr.; CB Reggie Gordon, Sr.

Key Trojans: RB Keshawn Lowe, Sr.; OL/DL Marquies Price, Sr.; DB Malcolm Lowe, Sr.; QB Robert Allen, Jr.

Scouting report: Peach County enters the seventh meeting with substantially more confidence than it did the sixth, and Warner Robins does so with more question mark. Going against a normal Peach County defense with a brand new quarterback can make things interesting, whether it’s a bigger school or not. This series is tied for a reason, although it’s worth noting that the first two meetings were in 1970 and 1971. The Trojans have won three since 2010.

MARY PERSONS AT JACKSON

Game time: 7:30 p.m.

Series history: Mary Persons leads 52-19

Last meeting: 2013, Mary Persons won 31-9

Key Bulldogs: RB Dee High, Sr.; C Tyler Camp, Sr; DE Demarcus Davis, Sr.; OL Amari Walker, Sr.

Key Red Devils: C Ron Reeves. Sr.; OT/DE Michail Carter, Jr.; RB Ira Sheppard, Jr.; LB Juan Sims, Sr.

Scouting report: Both teams have some holes to fill, but Mary Persons has lately been doing that a little better. Jackson has gone 17-24 the past four season after going 35-11 the previous four. The Red Devils have more of a running team this year, having to replace quarterback De’Eric Bell. Trent Davis, Sha’Colvian Douglas and Shaderious Crowder are all expected to be behind center at some point. The Bulldogs, who have won five of their past six openers, lost some quality playmakers who filled more than one role.

HOWARD AT FPD

Game time: 7:30 p.m.

Series history: First meeting.

Key Huskies: CB Clifton Tucker, Sr.; LB Abel Grant, Sr.; RB Tahjae Morant, Sr.

Key Vikings: QB Will McCormick, Jr.; FB Reggie Gantt, Jr.; WR/CB Jonathan Raines, Sr.

Scouting report: Howard, which had won just two games in the previous three seasons, surprised some last week with its tie against last year’s GHSA Class AA runner-up Lamar County. The Huskies shut down the Trojans in the first half, holding them to 43 total yards. Howard didn’t have as strong of a second half, but the Huskies didn’t quit and did enough to keep Lamar County from winning the game. FPD brings back some experience on offense, with McCormick back at quarterback and some of the other skill positions filled by veterans. But the defense is young, with just three returning starters. It’s the first meeting between a Bibb County public school team and a Bibb County private school team in nearly 50 years, and there is a lot of familiarity between FPD and Howard head coach Barney Hester, who won more than 300 games at Tattnall Square.

RUTLAND VS. WESTSIDE

Game time/site: 7:30 p.m./Ed DeFore Sports Complex.

Series history: Westside leads 4-0.

Last year: Westside won 33-13.

Key Hurricanes: QB Timori Northcutt, Sr.; RB TJ Faulks, Sr.; WR Dallas Smith, Sr.

Key Seminoles: RB Cedric Hollingshed, Sr.; RB Gerimie Mitchell, Jr.; WR Steve Dolphus, Jr.

Scouting report: Westside continues to enjoy success against Rutland, recording a 20-point win last year against a Hurricanes squad that included wide receiver Shakenneth Williams, who is now at Georgia. Rutland has just four starters back on offense, but one of those four is Northcutt, who passed for 1,386 yards and 17 touchdowns last year. Westside has six players back on offense, including a 952-yard rusher from last season in Hollingshed, and eight starters back on defense.

NORTHEAST VS. SOUTHWEST

Game time/site: 7:30 p.m./Henderson Stadium.

Series history: Northeast leads series 23-21.

Last year: Northeast won 21-6.

Key Raiders: RB Jerome Grayer, Soph.; QB Tekorian Denson, Sr.; RB Dequarius Johnson, Sr..

Key Patriots: WR/CB Tyree White, Sr.; QB Justin Slocum, Sr.; WR Josh Evans, Sr.

Scouting report: Northeast has thrived the past few years under head coach Bruce Mullen, riding the combination of strong defense and an offense led by Davion Anderson into three straight winning seasons. But Anderson is now at Charleston Southern, and only four starters return on defense. Southwest, meanwhile, heads into its second season under head coach Joseph Dupree after a winless 2013.
