Rutland wins two region track titles

The Rutland boys and girls swept the Region 2-AAAA track and field championships Friday.

Rutland’s boys finished 24 points ahead of runner-up West Laurens, ending the meet in style with a win in the 4x400-meter relay.

The girls rolled to a win with a strong performance in the track events.

Adriuanna Brown won the 300-meter hurdles, the 400 meters, the long jump and competed on both winning relay teams to chart a perfect meet. Rutland led by 0.5 points heading into the final day, but the Hurricanes ended up with a 62.5-point victory margin.

The Northside girls and boys track and field teams finished second to Greenbrier at the Region 2-AAAAA track meet.

Kevondre Hunt led the Eagles to the second place finish with a sweep of both hurdles distances, while Adajour Banks won the discus.

In the girls meet, Makhaela Witherspoon swept the shot put and discus, and freshman Cassondra Hall won the 100 and 200 meters to lead Northside. The Eagles also won the 4x400 relay and finished just two points behind region champion Greenbrier.

The other local winners from Region 2-AAAAA: Kiaira Jackson, Houston County (triple jump); Brian Cornish, Warner Robins (shot put); Rod Harris, Warner Robins (triple jump); Michael Callaway, Warner Robins (high jump); Victoria Dumas, Jones County (100 and 300 hurdles); Asha Stegall, Warner Robins (400).

The Peach County boys and girls teams both finished runners-up to Henry County at the Region 2-AAA meet.

The boys team got wins from Malcom Lowe (triple jump, 400 meters and 300 hurdles), Tyler Gibson (long jump and 100 and 200 meters), James Worsham (800 meters) and the 4x400 relay team. The boys finished 20 points behind Henry County.

Keondria Simmons swept the 100 and 200 meters to lead the Peach County girls. The Trojans went 1-2 in both hurdles distances, with Aniya Glover winning the 100 and Saleemah Gadson winning the 300. Peach County also won the 4x400 relay.

The girls came within 16 points of winner Henry County.

The other local winners in 2-AAA: Heather Malcom, Central (shot put), Emily Pennimon, Southwest (discus), Nicolas Mullen, Southwest (shot put).

In Region 4-AA, Monticello rolled to a comfortable victory in the girls region meet.

The Hurricanes outpaced runner-up Bleckley County by 68 points by winning 10 events.

Janee Chapman won the 100 and 200 meters and the long jump, while Alkeili Ross won the 400 and finished second in the 200. Tierra Whitlock won both hurdles distances, and the Hurricanes swept the two relays.

Monticello finished first and second in the 200 and 400 meters and the 300-meter hurdles.

Ellen Powell was the other double winner, taking the 800 and 1600 meters for Bleckley County.

The Lamar County boys edged Bleckley County by 12 points to win the 4-AA boys region title.

Miquavius Searcy won both the high jump and the triple jump for Lamar County, while teammate Lawrence Austin swept both hurdles races.

Eli Belflower paced Bleckley County with wins in the 800 and 1,600 meters.
