Class AAA boys: Westover outlasts Gainesville

Westover held off a furious rally by Gainesville to advance to Saturday’s GHSA Class AAA boys state championship game with a 59-56 win over the Red Elephants.

Westover will play the winner of Columbia and South Atlanta at 8:45 p.m. Saturday at the Macon Coliseum.

Gainesville trailed by six points with less than 24 seconds remaining before having a chance to win after Kenji Breedlove missed both free-throws with three seconds to go in the game and the Patriots leading by three points.

But Gainesville’s Blake Sims, who had drained two 3-pointers to give the Red Elephants a chance to win, couldn’t get his shot off before the final buzzer.

Sims scored 14 points for Gainesville. Dontreal Hicks led Westover with 23 points.
