Gritty fight ends with WR overtime victory


Warner Robins persevered through a hard game against Eagle’s Landing on Friday night in the GHSA 5A playoffs. The Demons won 26-23 in overtime.

Eagle’s Landing started the game strong taking an early lead and capitalizing on turnovers. The Demons struck back with a 95-yard kickoff return by Javen West, tying the game before the end of the half.

Both teams had scoring drives in the third quarter. In the fourth quarter, the game was tied 17-17, with both defenses showing up strong. Warner Robins scored a field goal late in the fourth to take the lead. With two minutes remaining, Eagle’s Landing marched down the field and hit a 32-yard field goal to send the game into overtime.

The Eagle’s had the first possession in overtime and scored a 22-yard field goal, giving the Demons the opportunity to win the game. Eagle’s Landing defense stood strong at the goal line, keeping the Demons out on three downs. In a surprise call, head coach Mike Chastain kept the offense out on fourth and one — putting the game on the line. The call paid off with a 1-yard touchdown from Jarius Burnett to win and sending the Demons into the next round of the GHSA playoffs.

Four who mattered

Jaeven West: Senior running back for Warner Robins rushed for 155 yards setting and caught for 40 yards on the night, including a 95-yard kickoff return late in the second to tie the ball game.

Dylan Fromm: The Demons junior quarterback threw for 188 yards on the night, including several key third down plays keeping the team alive.

Jarius Burnett: The senior running back scored the 1-yard rushing touchdown to win the game in overtime.

Deshawn Masten: The senior corner back for Eagle’s Landing intercepted two passes on the night leading to scoring plays for the Eagle’s keeping them in the game.

Turning point

Javen West returned a kickoff 95-yard for a game-tying score late in the second quarter, giving the Demons momentum for the second half.

They said it

Warner Robins head coach Mike Chastain: “I had a lot of faith in our guys. We go through those scenarios all summer and we were able to get the yards when we needed them. I just had faith that our guys would get it and they stepped up and got it.”

Warner Robins advances to the third round of the GHSA-5A playoffs.
