A nonprofit organization has committed an effort to raise funds to build a new home for the family of Devon Gales, the Southern University receiver who injured his spinal cord against Georgia on Sept. 26, 2015.

The Triumph Over Tragedy announced during a news conference at Butts-Mehre Heritage Hall that it will raise money toward a handicap-accessible home for the Gales family. The announcement was a surprise to the family and brought tears to Devon's father Donny and step-mother Tanisha.

Devon's parents reside in a three-bedroom house in Baton Rouge, Louisiana, and the family was looking for financing options to build a new home.

Donny said this will take pressure off of the family.

Devon was discharged from the Shepherd Center in Atlanta on Wednesday, which is where he's been recovering since the injury. His family made the trip to Athens to say their goodbyes to the people they've met who are associated with the university.

Devon had surgery at Athens Regional Medical Center to repair the C6 vertebrae following the Georgia-Southern game.
