Running back Sony Michel will probably see fewer special teams reps, Georgia head coach Mark Richt said on his weekly radio show.
Michel may be relegated to one special teams responsibility instead of being someone that participates on all four groups. There’s also the possibility, Richt said, of taking away all of Michel’s special teams roles.
Michel will assume top running back responsibilities now that Nick Chubb is out for the season with multiple torn ligaments in his knee. Chubb suffered the injury against Tennessee last Saturday. Taking Michel off of special teams would be done to limit his risk of injury.
Right guard Greg Pyke said the Bulldogs should be just fine with Michel leading the way in the backfield.
"He’s been there the whole year," Pyke said. "Chubb has been getting a lot of touches and then Sony would come in and do the exact same thing. We’re just going to pick up with him. Sony did a great job last Saturday and I think he’s going to continue to do that."
Richt also said on his radio show that fullback Quayvon Hicks may take some reps at running back this week in practice. This would be done for depth purposes, as Michel, Keith Marshall and Brendan Douglas are now the top three running backs on the depth chart.
