HOOVER, Ala. — Well, this is a bit strange.

The SEC media voted for how they see the conference shaking out this season. The results are a head-scratcher.

Winning the SEC East was no surprise, however, with Georgia receiving the most votes.

Winning the SEC West is Alabama. Winning the SEC championship?

Auburn.

This marked the first time in the 23-year history of the media preseason poll that a division champion was not predicted to win the conference.

How did the media come to this conclusion?

Each reporter was asked to predict the order of finish in the East and West. Separately, they were then asked to pick a champion. In the order of finish portion, Alabama only collected three votes for fourth place or lower. Auburn, conversely, received 26. That helped give Alabama (1,405) more overall points than Auburn (1,362). However, Auburn received more first-place votes than Auburn by a 108-92 margin.

With more media members picking Auburn to win the SEC West, the Tigers essentially got the conference champion nod as a result. In this vote, Auburn beat Alabama 96-80. Georgia was third with 28.

Only five times since 1992 has a media's predicted choice gone on to win the conference.

The results:
